Post Re: A noob and his experiments
Mad scientist time...
OK, above you saw that I tried caking on coffee grinds mixed with turmeric powder. It yellowed it a bit.
Then, I keep reading about the baking it in the oven idea... so, I decide to try something.
I was making coffee when I realised I didn't have enough coffee for a proper brew. I use one of those stovetop espresso percolators. So, I decided to add some cinnamon and turmeric powder to cover the shortage. It was a nice cup of coffee.
Then I got the idea, what if I threw my pilot dial into the grounds and heat it up a bit, would that work like the oven?
So I tried. I like the bizarre colouring that it left behind. That said, I am now trying the same thing with the hands because they justdon't match at this time...
Here is a recent pre-coffee pic.

Here's the coffee maker...

And here is the dial.

I'll post more when I get the hands looking the way I want

I don't like the strap with the orangy colours. How about this?

Thoughts on the new look? It's getting there, but I need some advice, as to what it needs.
I have a leather strap I might try to distress and recolour the bright white stitching. Need to find a leather(ish) punch too before I put it on.

It has to come apart soon, I left a smudge on the crystal and it's bugging me.

Ni8rider... Falmouth, Point Pelee, or Victoria? Figure I have the southern-most in each region. Cheers.

So, black hands arrived for experiment 5. I'm much happier. Just have to fix up the dial a bit. So I'd say it's 90% done. Image

Post Re: A noob and his experiments
Four purchases arrived this week. Experiment 4's dial arrived from Athaya. It's raw SS right now, but I can't wait to get a chance to clean it up and paint it.

Also I finally stripped the corguet for the case and maybe hands for Exp. 6, the 2nd Tokotai. It has a big coin edge bezel. The dial for that and a few other projects are on their way from rmcsherry. The 6497 clone from the Corguet has been put away to go under an art deco Ross dial(exp 8) in a Corguet 46mm case. I'll look for a nice Swiss movement for that.
The case arrived for exp. 7, a Pam homage with a black/red guitar-style sunburst. (I hope to make a matching 35mm version for the wife from a vintage Vantage).
Now, if only I had paint and tools for the dials... Can't wait to get to BC this summer to get 'dialing'.
Also, this summer I'll pick up the 2 movements I acquired from unreformed66. (Not to mention another donor watch or two.)

This is the full family of current experiments and a runt (The BS 24hr Sturnmanski with a converted Raketa that didn't work well - it's waiting for a Ronda Quartz 505.24 or 515.24).

They are in order 1 to 8. Yes, the dial is all that 's left of 3. This was before I put the black hands on 5, and stripped the movement and case out of 6. I know a lot of this is Chinese, but I don't mind the quality of the cases, and I won't be afraid to take a file to them.

I'm definitely ready for this move into customized dials, and Swiss movements.

And I'm still blessed that the wife hasn't grumbled too much. She knows it keeps my mind occupied.

Cheers everyone.

Waiting on a movement from unreformed66 for this... The chinese 6498 died the day after this pic.

Always gives me something to do when waiting for things to arrive. So jumped in.
Needed a hobby, no place to work on bikes or cars, not much of a cook, no home improvements for the rental unit... Watches seemed a good choice.

So, i noticed that the pilot is fading. The orange from the turmeric has faded to much earthier color.
The black face of the dial is still pretty new looking. Suggestions on aging it?

Tried brushing the sides with a copper wire brush, and I thought I was getting some nice fading... and it rubbed off after. Lol. The glossy black pvd that Parnis uses is pretty robust.

For aging the black surface without altering the rest of the dial I would use baby powder.

After getting a coat of powder over the surface you can seal it using hair spray and repeat the process if necessary.

Thanks for the tip. You don't have a photo of it in practice?

Officially part of the unreformed66 fan club. Put this Star Eatch Co. 6498 no seconds, into parnis PAM case, with Parnis(label removed) full lume dial. Lume lasts sll of 30 minutes, but I like it for now. This is one of those watches that will eventually become something else, but for now I'm pleased.ImageImage

Working on dials... First epic fail.
Lesson learned... Brushing on paint is not so good... Will have to buy spray paint to do what I want.Image

Another failure... Bought this to reshape for a watch for my wife... She doesn't really want a square watch. Actually, that's kinda good because I'm really liking this watch.

What a pity that your wife's does not like it
Reshaped it could make a nice 6152.
What is the case diameter?
