Post Heuer 844 Orange Diver project
Finished this project about a month ago after a ruinous eBay and forum rampaging splurge on parts. The iconic Heuer 844 Orange diver.

Notice anything interesting about the dial?
Image

Yup. It's 'Made in France'. This is one of the first divers made by Monnin for Heuer, before the latter fully committed to the diver market and started producing their own around 1980. Interestingly, Monnin Holding AG is apparently now owned by three shareholders: Patek Philippe, Richemont Group and Rolex. Heuerville will keep me honest. Check it out.

The dial. All original. And cheap. Easily found on the 'bay' with a supplier that perennially seems to have 'only 3 left'. I bought 3. And the seller has more. Suggest you get these while you can.
Image

The Case. Many divers of the era shared the same case originally built by Buren (think squale). This case lives on today as the CWC Royal Navy Diver, the issued successor to the Rolex MilSub 5517.
Image

The Movement. FE 4611. French Ebouche 4611. French made awesomeness.
Image

Closeup.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks guys. Glad you like it. This ain't HF if you can't share the knowledge, so here's a few more build pics.

First, the donor case deconstructed. Relatively simple. I used a butter knife to pry apart the bezel assembly.
Image

A closeup of the bezel assembly... I kept taking pictures so I could remember where everything came from.
Image

... and the disassembled bezel. I'm used to PAMs and vintage Rolex, so this was the first time I saw this assembly up close.
Image

The case after a few sonic cleaning cycles and the bezel with the new insert.
Image

Afterwards I re-brushed the top surfaces of the case...
Image

... with a good high quality German 240 grit sandpaper and a nail file.
Image

The end result. I know, the brushing is hard to see, but it's there.
Image

I installed the the new sapphire crystal with my poor man's crystal press: a vise. My standard crystal press failed me with uneven distribution of pressure and I found that this setup works flawlessly.
Image

Mounted the dial on the FE 4611. There are two screws mounted on the y-plane that hold the dial feet together.
Image

Installed the hands.
Image

Finally, cased the movement.
Image

I just wanted to acknowledge the great help Justin B over at Chronocentric was in helping out whenever I got stuck. I purchased the new sapphire and gasket set from him, as well as the new custom made Monnin insert. He might be a member here actually.

Thanks for looking! :D

Thanks for the plug and don't be so modest, it turned out great! Very nice build my friend. Your attention to detail is something I don't see often on these orange builds. You did it right and with all the new parts it should be a reliable runner for a long time.

Thanks for blowing the lid off these orange dialed beauties. I guess I'll have to buy a dial or two to stock up :D

If anyone has any questions about these feel free to email me (my pm notifications seem to go to spam about half the time so email is best or via message on my website).

Wear it in good health my friend!

Yup. Very much usable. I bought one from this seller as well :)

When taking out the stem on the FE4611 you unscrew the top screw, very much like working on a 6497. Take it slowly so you don't mess up the keyless.

Watchesu571 on the bay has homage versions of the CWC diver you can start with. A cheaper option at around $120, but I've never tried them. Oddly they don't seem to have any in stock now.

An even cheaper option for those who want to go the quartz route is this homage from bay seller roanne1. The case is thinner though so not sure if an auto movement would fit. You'd definitely need a new caseback to give more space for the movement. Crown positioning is low and it comes with mineral glass. I bought one to play around with and maybe build a PVD orange diver. I'll get around to publishing a case comparing one day.
Image

If you're going the vintage case route, it'll be around $250 to $450 depending on how many eagle eyes have spotted the auction on the bay. Good luck

The eBay seller sometimes includes the correct black hands which are specific to the dial. You're lucky if he does. If not you'll have to take the black Mercedes hands route, easily available with other bay sellers. Only the minute hand will be different, look at the minute hand tip.

Justin B (posted above) can source the spacer for you.

Btw I've been trying to get some better shots of the dial color as the ones above don't do it justice. It's more of an earthy pumpkin color. Like this.
